Immigration Policy
With the impact of the global pandemic, the intake of permanent residents (PR) slowed down significantly in 2020. With the improved domestic condition in Canada, it is expected to see a surge in immigration number in 2021; over 400,000 applicants are expected to receive approval for permanent residency this year.
The number of permanent residents for 2022 and 2023 is also expected to exceed 400k, respectively. This is in the sharp contrast with the past few years when the number of approved PR ranged between 300k and 400k per year.
Between 2021 and 2023, the sheer number of immigrants will place Canada to be one of the top immigration destinations in the world. Favourable and flexible immigration policies play an important role in this regard.
Skilled Workers
Canadian Experience
In February 2021, 27,300 skilled workers received approval for permanent residency and 90% of them were already staying in Canada.
Overseas applicants are expected to receive more invitations once international travel resumes.
COVID-19 Driven PR
With the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Federal government plans to grant over 90,000 permanent residency permits to essential workers who are currently on temporary work permits (1+ years of experience).
The plan also covers international graduates (4+ years of study) who are already contributing to the economic recovery in Canada during COVID-19.
Provincial Nomination
In May 2021, the Saskatchewan Government sent out 259 invitations for permanent residency under the provincial nomination program for skilled workers.
The score for eligible candidates was over 70.
